Welcome to July!

We have reached the second part of 2011, and some important aspects of net neutraity are still undefined. But what exactly is net neutrality? The internet was designed to be an open medium, so that all websites, their content, features and services should be treated without discrimination. The principle of net neutrality guarantees a level playing field for all web sites and internet technologies. Some telecommunication companies are trying to change the way the internet is provided and how much we pay to access different websites based on content. We already pay a recurring charge to access the internet, but should we also pay more to access websites that provide a rich audiovisual experience because of the bandwidth involved? Or because we use a mobile device to access a website versus a device directly connected to a local access network? The final answers to these and many other questions are still pending. It is not an easy task to reach a fair agreement for all parties, but who keeps the people's best interest as their priority?

Meanwhile, most of the major players in the internet industry continue their furious pace into the transition to IPv6, just last month Google, Facebook, and Yahoo, to mention a few, joined more than 1000 other companies participating in a global 24-hour trial of this new Internet Protocol. It was successful, no major issues were detected. Are you ready? You can find out here

The tablet revolution continues in full swing. As of February 2011, before Apple launched their iPad 2, and before RIM started selling their PlayBook, there were around 110 tablets in production from 62 vendors. Within the next four years the tablet market should grow 5 times faster than the PC market. Is this the end of the PC? Hardly. Even though consumers are adopting tablets faster than the computer was adopted initially, this new technology will not fully replace the PC. Social networking, media consumption and entertainment applications will take advantage of the mobility of the tablets, but for serious computing power and storage needs, extreme gaming, and intense business applications will continue to evolve using a mixture of computers and tablets. The post PC era is a phase that does not really end the personal computer era, but it marks a shift in the emphasis and direction of the hardware and software production. At home we still need to keep up with our desktops and laptops, and the first order of the day is to make sure the antivirus and protection software is current and effective, and to scan our drives regularly. It is also important to backup your data so that even in the event of hardware failure, your files and information are safe and accessible.
